A dish is hit with a spoon. Sound is produced by the spoon or the dish? Sound is produced by the dish only. Sound comes from an object which vibrates. For example if the wires of the instrument Veena or the skin arranged on the drum etc. are hit, the sound could be heard for some time. That explains that sound comes from objects which have elasticity and tension. These are called free vibrations. When the dish is hit with a spoon, free vibrations occur from the dish. Forced vibrations occur in the air present inside the dish causing a loud noise. Vibrations occur in the spoon also, but since it is held in the hand, the sound is absorbed by the hand. If the spoon is dropped from a height on the floor, the sound comes from the vibrations of the spoon.
