Nopal cactus plant is used for purifying water | Mucilage in Nopal cactus plant purifies water

Nopal cactus Water is very important for life on earth and it is purified before drinking. There are many devices which help in purifying water but in Mexico, people use a plant to purify their water. People in Mexico use Nopal cactus or prickly pear plant to purify water.

How is water purified with plants?

First, nopal cactus plant is boiled in water. They separate the plant from water and eat it as food. This boiled water is mixed with normal water. After sometime, the dirt settles at bottom and water is purified. They drink the water which is on above layer.

Research on Nopal cactus plant:

To know the discovery of this process, scientists belonging to South Florida had started research. They had discovered that mucilage in nopal cactus plant is purifying the water. Mucilage is helpful for storing the water in plant and it purifies water in five minutes only. Normally aluminum sulphate is used for purifying the water in many places which takes 15 minutes to purify. Based on the results, they started further research on the plant.
