Names of Calendar months | Names of months derived from Roman Gods names

Names of Calendar monthsCalendar was initially with only ten months. Later it was changed to twelve months.  Names of some months are derived from the names of Roman Gods, some months are derived from the names of royal families and while some names of the months are derived from their ordinal number. January was derived from the name of the goddess Janus.  The name February was derived from the early Italian god Februs or Februa. Romans take the word Februs as a symbol for purity. March was named after the name of Mars, Roman war goddess.

April is also called as Aprilis. It was derived from the word Apryer which meant blossom. May has come from the name of Roman goddess Mayista. June has come from the name of a royal king named Juno. It was in July Julius Seizer was born. As a tribute to his greatness, it was named as July. August was named after the name of Roman Emperor named Augstus. Remaining months were named based on their ordinal number. Seventh month was named as September, eighth month was named as October, ninth month was named as November and tenth month was named as December. When the calendar has only ten months, March was the first month. Due to that reason, September is taken as seventh month. After adding January and February also, the previous names of the months are continued.
