How is the water purified by the animals? | Which animal helps in purifying water?

Mussel Water is the main source for the life on the earth and when the water is polluted, it would become difficult for the life to sustain. A small animal called the Mussel protects the life on the earth and it lives in the water. We generally see the shells on the seashore which are very hard and these shells are those in which the mussels live. These animals kill the bacteria and fungus from time to time. They take in the polluted water and give out the pure water. And so they are called as the filter feeders. In this way, a single mussel purifies one gallon of water. The large number of mussels in a river which extend up to half mile purify 11.2 million gallons of water and this water serves the needs of 1,12,000 people. There are more number of mussels in America in the world and there are 292 types of mussels in total. They are decreasing in number as they are being eaten by people. And other animals like star fishes, ducks etc are eating them as their favorite food. The scientists are taking special interest in harvesting them as it will be a problem if they are extinct. The female animals lay the eggs in the pipes and they change as larvae. And they come out and go to new areas.
