Arthur Wine used to see the fun pages in the New York magazine which is of 8 pages. He had tried to give something new in 1913 Christmas edition and this attempt was the word cross. This cross word puzzle became world famous and he used to write the cross word in the diamond shape in the beginning. He wrote the word fun in the first line and started filling the other rows with the words which start with the last letters. He used to write the numbers on the boxes and he gave the explanation for the word in the box. This was the hint for the people to fill the crossword and people started encouraging it. He tried it in many shapes and finally fixed to the square shape. And slowly the name of word cross was changed to cross words. In 1914, the New York World decided to stop the cross words as there were many mistakes. As there was great response to the crosswords, they started it again and even though it was famous, it was limited to New York only. And in 1924, two people named Simon and Master took the degree of journalism from the Columbia school of Journalism. They started to do a business and they released the first book of cross words puzzle and the whole world came to know about it.
